PROJECT
Woolwich Leisure Centre
Woolwich Leisure Centre is one of the UK’s largest urban leisure facilities, offering state-of-the-art sports halls, pools, gyms, and soft play areas. The project involved a full refurbishment and expansion, playing a key role in the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s ambitious regeneration programme.
Halsion successfully delivered a comprehensive MEP service, providing a fully integrated building services solution designed to support a modern, high performance leisure facility.
Electrical Installation
The electrical works comprised a robust low voltage (LV) distribution system, designed to support the demands of a busy leisure environment. High-efficiency LED lighting was installed throughout the facility, enhancing energy performance while maintaining optimal lighting levels across all areas.
Specialist electrical supplies were delivered for key systems including pool plant, HVAC infrastructure, and gym equipment. These were seamlessly integrated with smart building technologies, including:
- Building Management System (BMS)
- Fire detection systems
- CCTV
- Data and communications networks
This integration ensures efficient monitoring, control, and long-term operational performance.
An anti-down system was installed in the pool areas, providing an advanced safety solution to monitor swimmers and reduce the risk of incidents. Leak detection systems were all incorporated to provide early warning of potential issues, protecting both the building infrastructure and its users.
Mechanical Services
A complete HVAC solution was implemented to provide effective ventilation, heating, and cooling throughout the building.
Air Handling Units were installed to serve all primary areas, including pool halls and changing facilities, delivering full supply and extract ventilation. Fan Coil Units (FCUs) were utilised in smaller spaces such as offices and soft play areas, offering flexible climate control.
Air Source Heat Pumps, located at roof level, form the core of the heating and cooling strategy. These systems supply:
- Heating and cooling to FCUs
- Heating to radiators
- Underfloor heating within the sports hall
In the basement, buffer vessels store heated and chilled water at controlled temperatures, managed via the BMS. To ensure system resilience, three gas boilers are installed to meet peak demand and to support future expansion, including a planned residential development phase.
A sprinkler system was installed within the basement plant area, supported by both electric and diesel pumps to maintain operation in the event of a power outage.
Public Health & Plumbing
The full Public Health installation across site included:
- Complete drainage systems and gullies
- Toilet waste systems
- Shower and changing area drainage
- Installation on sanitaryware including drinking fountains
This project resulted in a highly efficient facility that combines sustainability, resilience, safety and user comfort across all areas of operation.
