The design of Three Rivers Academy (formerly Ryden’s Enterprise School) focuses around the ‘house’ system with 4 different houses linked together with a common spine. The scheme also includes a full-sized indoor basketball court, 3G football pitch, sixth form centre and general offices. The overheating risk of the building is reduced by a combination of mechanical ventilation and the exposed concrete soffit preventing high temperatures by absorbing the heat from the occupants and solar gain during warm days when the ventilation air has little capacity to absorb the heat.
The Window Master Unit will provide automatic and secure night cooling, along with natural ventilation units providing crossflow ventilation. The specification and design of the building, together with an extensive roof-mounted range of photovoltaic panels and LED lighting throughout helped the school achieve an energy performance certificate rating A.
