Project Orion, AWE Aldermaston

Project Orion, AWE Aldermaston

CATEGORY: commercial

Brief Description:

The Orion laser facility at AWE Aldermaston, one of the largest scientific capital investments in the UK. The building houses a large neodymium glass laser system and a target chamber in which the high energy density physics experiments are performed. This is necessary to support certification of performance and safety of the UK deterrent.

In addition to the main laser, compression and target halls, this project also provided several other clean room environment spaces, offices, and welfare areas. Halsion supplied and installed all of the mechanical, electrical and public health systems throughout including DX systems installed to locations with critical components, a vacuum system, a nitrogen system, extensive chilled water system served via two large external chillers, low temperature hot water, domestic hot and cold including rainwater harvesting, varying types of ventilation systems, lighting, power, fire alarm and data. Co-ordination was critical on this project to ensure a building with many complex systems and components worked seamlessly together.

Key Statement:

The Orion laser, one of the biggest capital science projects in the UK in the last 25 years.
