The £4.5 million Idea Store was jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and Tower Hamlets Council and includes an integrated One Stop Shop, where residents can access council services. It also provides adult, youth and children’s library services complemented by a ground-floor space which hosts a range of community facilities, including advice on council and health services. The main focus of the project was the incorporation of low carbon practices. The specific equipment installed included: a main air handling unit complete with air source heat pump, high efficiency heat recovery and adiabatic spray cooler.
The ventilation system in the building was TermoDeck, utilising the slabs within the building to provide cooling. The project received a BREEAM accreditation of Very Good and a number of measures were incorporated into the design to achieve this. These include a semi intensive green and brown roof, concrete floor plates for thermal insulation, and photovoltaic cells on the roof.
